Every week, clients walk into Prasad Printers with the same question: "Should I go offset or digital?" It's a good question — and the honest answer is that there is no universal winner. The right choice depends on your specific job, your budget, your timeline, and the quality you need.

After over five decades in the print industry, we have helped thousands of clients make this decision. This article will walk you through everything you need to know to choose correctly — without the jargon.

What is Offset Printing?

Offset printing is the traditional workhorse of commercial printing. Ink is transferred (or "offset") from a metal plate to a rubber blanket, and then from the blanket onto the paper. The result is exceptionally sharp, consistent, and vibrant colour across every single sheet in the run.

This is how books, magazines, brochures, newspapers, and most high-volume commercial print is produced. At Prasad Printers, our Sheetfed press fleet handles everything from two-colour letterheads to full CMYK packaging, and also beyond CMYK to the brand's pantone colour at precision that is difficult to match.

The key advantage of offset: Once the plates are made and the press is calibrated, the cost per sheet drops dramatically as quantity increases. This makes it the most economical choice for runs above 500 copies.

What is Digital Printing?

Digital printing works like a high-powered office printer — but at a commercial scale and with far superior colour accuracy. There are no plates involved. The file goes directly from your computer to the press, which means setup time is minimal and you can start printing within minutes.

At Prasad Digitals, our digital division in Kodialbail, we use digital presses that deliver consistent, accurate colour across short runs — from 10 copies to 1,000. Digital also enables something offset cannot: variable data printing, where every single piece can be personalised with a different name, address, or code.

The key advantage of digital: No plate costs, no minimum quantities, and fast turnarounds. For small runs or personalised print, digital is the clear winner.

When to Choose Offset

Choose offset printing when:

  • You are printing 500 or more copies of the same design
  • You need Pantone or spot colour matching — for brand colours that must be exact
  • Your job requires special finishes like UV coating, foil, or embossing
  • You want the lowest cost per unit at high volumes
  • You are printing books, magazines, or catalogues with section sewing or perfect binding
  • You need large format sheets that go beyond digital press sizes

Prasad Printers tip: If you print the same brochure or calendar every year with minor updates, offset is almost always the right choice above 500 copies. The quality is unmatched and the per-unit cost drops significantly.

When to Choose Digital

Choose digital printing when:

  • You need fewer than 500 copies
  • You need it fast — same day or next day delivery
  • You want to personalise each piece — names, addresses, unique codes
  • You are testing a design before committing to a large print run
  • You need short run books, certificates, menus, or event collateral
  • Your budget is limited and quantity is low

Prasad Digitals tip: Digital is perfect for restaurants updating menus seasonally, businesses printing personalised invitations, or brands doing short-run packaging trials before the full production run.

The Hybrid Approach

Many of our clients use both — offset for the main run and digital for personalised versions or last-minute additions. For example, a corporate client might print 2,000 standard brochures on offset and 50 personalised versions for key accounts on digital. The quality is comparable; the strategy is smart.

Having both capabilities under one roof — as we do at Prasad Printers and Prasad Digitals — means you never have to compromise.
